Extra Action Marching Band – Black Chicken

July 31st, 2007

The Extra Action Marching Band takes the excitement and costuming of stadium school marching bands and brings it to a nightclub setting. They mix big horns with a hipster vibe and add some real action courtesy of lots of writhing dancing eyecandy in this new video for the song Black Chicken. The video might make you a bit nauseous as the camera jumps and spins a bit. This kind of reminds me of the 80’s-90’s Crash Worship days…minus all the smelly hippies.

Repurposed Chucky Cheesebots

July 30th, 2007

Umm yeah apparently some folks have started to purchase and reprogram the scary animatronic characters from Chucky Cheese to preform some real modern classics. We start here with “Hey there Delila” by the Plain White T’s…the song is pretty much unbearable on it’s own…get it…unBEARable. ouch.

Hey there Delila-

from there we move on to something with a little more…color.

Ms. New Booty-

in conclusion the creator of this madness (did you ever watch the Bob Newhart show? think Daryl) attempts to explain the reasoning behind this…

I’m not just making them jiggle around-

Bonnie Prince Billy- Seedling Video

July 29th, 2007

Will Oldham continues to blossom into one of America’s great singer songwriters, and Drag City just released another video for “The Seedling” from last years excellent album The Letting Go…which is really a must own for anyone who digs this kind of music…by that i mean GOOD music. I’m not entirely sure what the video is all about, or why Billie has fluorescent lips, but I assume it is trying somehow to present the overall creepy feeling the song emits as Oldham proclaims triumphant his ability to procreate. The tune starts out simple and builds in layers adding violin, drums and other atmosphere, and climaxes with the chorus in repeat…

The Robocop Kraus- You Don’t Have To Shout

July 23rd, 2007

From the Talking Heads we move on to Talking Heads homage. This video is clearly a nod of the head to the original Heads, and the band often gets accused of stealing from the Heads. You can give some of their other stuff a listen, to me it’s pretty much all over the 80’s map…some Cure some New Order etc. They are (according to a great deal of comments) currently one of the most popular working German bands. It’s good stuff, but this kind of thing is somewhat disappointing as they don’t really build much on the music of those bands to take it anywhere fresh, just sort of a rehash.

Talking Heads Live 1980 Rome

July 21st, 2007

Hey! In case you didn’t get the memo someone uploaded this kickass concert from Rome 1980 with a fully stacked deck of Talking Heads! Adrian Belew, Bernie Worrell and more..Damn this band just kicks ass live. Even if David Burn is just a Mark Mothersbaugh imitator at heart. They all look incredibly young and this has the adverse effect of making me feel slightly old. slightly…c’mon.

Na Ponta dos Pés

July 18th, 2007

Proving once again that all you need is a great idea and some motivation to create an engaging film, check out this short film featuring an overly cheerful ballerina dancing her way through the problems of urban life. It’s really incredible how technology has turned virtually everyone into a film maker, and as films from Hollywood continue to be impressively bad, we will continue to migrate from the theaters to Youtube and other delivery services. Obviously this means a whole lotta crap is going to flow into the ocean, but more good turds will continue to float to the surface, and sometimes part of the fun is just searching…through the turds.

Rollins Interview- Henry visits Iran

July 15th, 2007

If you read this blog you know I am somewhat of a Rollins afficianado…whatever, he’s a level headed dude who always has time for fans, oh yeah and he’s a smart guy who uses his position in life to expose stupidity and promote general well being. Here is an interview from Popmatters.com Chris Catania, where Henry discusses his recent trip to Iran (Currently number one in the axis of evil gunsights?). It’s a good read, and with Cheney gunning for war in Iran it is certainly timely.

Roger McGuinn- Recording tips

July 15th, 2007

Roger McGuinn of the Byrds talks about modern recording on a laptop. Pretty cool interview with a real vet of the music industry, it’s always cool to see some of the old guard embrace technology. His point that resonated mostly with me was about the microphone…he’s got a fancy 4k microphone, and this still seems like the most important piece of equipment to me (along with placement, and room etc, things you can learn or pay a good engineer for). There have been improvements in recording, and it is more accessible, however you still need quality pre-amps and microphones, and you don’t really want to skimp on those. He talks a bit about mastering as well, sadly (for me anyway) he is windows based, obviously there are mac alternatives to all the programs he is talking about (or they are cross platform like the Adobe one…does ANYONE else use that program?).

Dizzy Gillespie & Louis Armstrong – Umbrella Man

July 14th, 2007

What a cool late night find this is, check out these two master jazz trumpet players as they perform Umbrella Man together. The trumpet is an instrument that really can do interesting things to someones head…watch as Dizzy, with his trademark angled trumpet, puffs up like some kind of blowfish, just amazing. There is no date on this, but it must be pretty old as they look young.
