Andrew Bird and the Armchair Apocrypha
This album has been out for a week or so now, and I’ve been holding off doing a review giving it some time to fester as I really enjoy Andrew’s music and appreciate the complexity of what he does. Bird plays and loops violin, plays guitar, sings, and is one heck of a whistling fool. In order to fully appreciate him you need to see him live (see related video below), along with Martin Dosh, who’s influence and collaboration are clearly evident in Andrew’s music. Keeping that in mind Armchair Apocrypha seems to deliver the usual from Andrew (and some new cohorts here is the official press release) however I have yet to discover anything as catchy as “I” or “Nervous Tick…”, classics from his previous recordings. The song “I” from 2003’s Weather Systems gets a bit of a speed bump makeover and appears as “Imitosis”, and actually kind of pops out as the most catchy tune on the album.
