Metallica continues slow de-evolution! No new news there…

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

It’s really unfortunate that Metallica’s bass player died in that bus crash…as opposed to the rest of the band. It seems like they have just been de-evolving into primordial sludge ever since. During their heyday I’ll admit I was more interested in punk rock, but I still liked what they were doing along with their somewhat more pathetic, yet equally enjoyable to me, little brother Megadeth. In what appears to be their latest media gaffe, they invited a bunch of journalists to a special listening session of songs from their yet to be released album. After these journalists wrote some reviews on their blogs, they were contacted and told to remove the reviews…no non disclosure contracts were signed, and apparently no one was told not to write about it? So without hearing the album I’m going to write a review about it right here, and see if they contact me to take it down…The new Metallica album sucks as much as the one before it, and if they had any dignity left they’d kill each other. This spoiled bunch of sadly self absorbed has beens have milked the life out of whatever formula they undeniably pioneered and perfected 20 years ago. If you need any proof on what a bunch of useless skinbags these guys have become, view the documentary “Some Kind of Monster” in which they douche it out with each other so much their label has to call in a “band coach” to help them finish their record. It’s clearly one of the most comedic films I’ve seen in years. The ability to play music is a gift…somewhere along the line Lars and James may have forgotten that.

Prince continues to parade his ignorance…

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

What do you expect…he’s been unable to shake his 80’s persona forever (despite the numerous attempts) which is not necessarily a bad thing, he was somewhat amusing in his high heels and puffy shirts. This is an interesting development in the arena of online copyright battle, Prince had performed a cover of Radiohead’s song Creep live (if you want to hear a much better Radiohead song watch this). His excited fans had uploaded their videos of said performance to Youtube. Price, being a half-pint Luddite (or at least his representatives) have told Youtube to remove the videos. Tom Yorke has responded basically issuing the statement “Unblock them, it’s our song”. Be curious to see if this develops further.

Direct Note Access

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

Times are changing. Definitely. Celemony is a company started in 1997 by Peter Neubäcker together with his wife, Prof. Dr. Hildegard Sourgens, and software developer and Technical Director, Carsten Gehle, which is based in Munich. They created a program that can analyze audio and edit the individual notes, and also transcribe the notes into music notation and MIDI. While this is not new since several notation programs can this, they have recently found a way to analyze an audio chord and transcribe the individual notes within the chord. Those same notes can be edited within the chord to change the harmony of it.

My First Mux! Feelin’ Kinda Punk

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

Happy Sunday to you! I made my first Muxtape and would like to share it with y’all. Actually it’s my second one, first one was all classical music, I’ll try to recreate it later, something was going on with their servers which prevented me from being able to link to it. This site is great fun, you should make a Mux and post the link to it here in the comments so we can listen to some of your favorite music, and mock each other for our poor taste! Here is my track list for this one-

Muxtape- Mix it up yo!

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

This is a really simple yet elegant site devised to allow you to create and share music mixes. I really appreciate the design of this thing which has basically no bells and whistles, and gets right to the point. Very well executed design in my opinion. The site was getting hammered with traffic as of this posting, so you can’t create an account, but their blog says they will be back up after 9pm. For now you can still head over and enjoy other people’s mixes. It is interesting to think, perhaps we will eventually no longer have any physical music of our own…it will all just be online at sites like this?

5 Ways for Musicians to Sell Music Online

Saturday, March 1st, 2008

I’ll admit it, I support and have participated in my fair share of online music sharing. I disagree with the RIAA for their overhanded lawsuit tactics in trying to stop it. I bitch about it plenty, but today I decided to do something positive for my fellow musicians, look at me go. The time is clearly here for us to be selling our goods online ourselves. Does this mean the end of the music industry and record labels as we know it…absolutely not, or I don’t really care one way or another. Let’s face it, a major record label probably isn’t going to be remotely interested in signing me, my post rock instrumental band, or any of the oddball country western conglomerates I participate in. That being said, I did a little research on some of the easy ways we can all sell our “product” using this wonderful new tool. First off, you don’t necessarily even need to sell your music online, especially if you are just starting out. Give it away and tour like crazy…people need to know who you are before they will buy your wares, so give them a taste of the product and get them coming back for more, this seems to work in the drug marketplace…of course this is reliant on the fact that you have toiled away long enough and you now have some high grade gold to wet their appetite with. This is not a lecture on you and your music, we will assume that you have already come down that road, and get on with finding our helpful friends. Some of these I’ve personally used some I have not and I will note this as we go. Also, none of these are sponsors of Etherbomb (at the time of this posting in any way).

1-100 years all on the same drum!

Sunday, January 13th, 2008

Well here is a clever idea, what would it sound like if you had human beings aged 1-100 each take a whack at the same drum in succession? This video gives you the answer…I have to confess number 78 was my favorite, I dig his moxy, and hope to be that rambunctious should I be lucky enough to travel that far on this journey.

Vinyl Sleeve Heads!

Friday, January 4th, 2008

Here is a fun collection of silly people getting some extra mileage from those old, and not so old, vinyl album covers…remember those kids? ALL records used to come in these “sleeves”, and you used to have to get up from the computer, leave the house, and spend time “browsing” in an actual store…without firefox or soulseek. Some really great ideas here, and amongst the Etherbomb staff favorites are of course are Big Black, and Prince. Thanks are in order to Mr. Willis for this fun link. In this alternate universe, people and album covers meld together as one in peaceful and occasional dissonant harmony.
