This was done by Jesus Contreras and Hannah Manfredi as a music and video collaboration. The story is about a little girl that wakes up to find herself in Mexico. She meets a young boy named Salvador who is on his way to sell mangos at the market. She doesn’t know whether she is still sleeping or awake. The animation and artwork was done by Hannah Manfredi, who also supplies the voice in the narration. Interesting enough, the music and vocals were completed before the animation was shot. All of the music was realized in Live You may need to go directly to the video on Youtube if you have trouble reading the subtitles. Some musical genres simply don’t need to intersect…it’s ok really, they can survive on their own just fine. One example would be country and rap. I imbibe both of these flavors of music just fine on their own, however I have yet to see any combination of the two that has been anything just short of embarrassing, and often nauseating. I’m always happy to be proven wrong, but here again I think I am right. Willie Nelson is nothing short of a musical hero in my book, and Snoop, well he is one smooth operator, but he just seems completely awkward up there trying to sing along with Willie…perhaps it’s just the mediocre quality of the tune itself, but I’m not buying it fellas. I do completely understand why they might be hanging out and sharing some…smoke.
I’ve never been a huge fan of flutes or human beatbox dudes (with the sole exception of this guy)…and I can’t say this video really does much to change my mind. He is really good though, and don’t let my personal distaste for instruments which fall into the “ruined by hippies” category influence your enjoyment of this gentleman’s ingenious genre instrument mashing talent.
Karlheinz Stockhausen who just passed away, would probably be best known for being listed on the BeatlesSt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album (check your liner notes for where he is on the cover). But he was a modernist composer who was at the forefront of the serialist and electronic music in the 50’s, 60’s, and into the 70’s. He would also unfortunately be remembered for his controversial comments about the September 11 attacks in which he alleged to have said the attacks were “works of art”. As to whether he said it or not, it is possible he did. But in doing so, you would have to first understand the man himself and more importantly, his music for context. More importantly, that he would’ve not said to be sympathetic to the attackers in any shape or form. Rather, he was a consummate composer in which everything in the world was filtered through his ears (and eyes) as music.
Classic experiment in physics involving propane, a pvc tube, a speaker…and a crazy dude. Ok he’s maybe he’s not entirely crazy, and this is a pretty damn fun way to waste an afternoon probably. Basically you have to poke a bunch of holes in the tube and run the gas into it. Then you manipulate the flame with sound…just watch the video it’s one of those cases where my lame attempt to explain it falls short…A search on Youtube brings up a few (million) more examples.
Watch as this six person hit squad invades this home in a quiet suburban neighborhood. They are in the kitchen, busting out some percussion with your appliances, silverware, fido’s bowl…even the hard boiled egg slicer has a solo! Next it’s on to your bedroom where they soil your love nest with their dirty beats, one of these deviates even helps himself toy your perfume! After this they feel the need to clean up apparently…bald guy uses your tooth brush, um tooth brushes he soils them both. For the grand finale they trash your living room.
However you can invent a creative new way to play the guitar and expand the possibilities. Check out this guy (i don’t know if he invented the technique) as he finger picks the lower registers and plays melodies over top with the spoon…in his mouth, using it as a slide.
