Henry Rollins: Letter to Ann Coulter

Monday, April 23rd, 2007

Ah good old Henry Rollins…if I had to pick a spokesman for my American punk rock generation it would be Henry. He never quite reached the poetic heights of the music and words of the Minutemen, but we lost D. Boon too fucking early on this journey, so we are left with the bright mind and intense, yet still somewhat goofy words of Henry as he continues to hand the idiot fucks of the world the delicious thrashing they deserve. Here he is even volunteering to take that wretched reptile Ann Coulter off the public stage of buffoonery she has constructed for herself and give her a nice new home. He has a show on IFC which you should of course tune in for.

1987 is kind of a blur to me as well…

This seems to be right around the time this band really peaked out…two drummers, dancing girls covered in green goo, video of auto safety gone terribly wrong. Combine that with an audience of tripping kids and you had a little slice of punk rock nirvana. The Buttholes live performances are legendary, and the band was really one of a kind, the perfect rock combo of a great front man and a mind blowing original guitarist, infected with an attitude overflowing with fevered insanity. I saw a few shows in this time period and they always had an inherent sense of danger to them. Cherub is one of my favorite songs of theirs, it’s simple yet trance like bass drone really sucks me in. The obviously low budget home made video has that really nice 80’s type theatrical intro.

Here is a kind of dumb interview, with a pretty great performance of Mexican Caravan at the end:
